Why Is My Air Conditioner Freezing Up?

Seeing ice on your air conditioner can be alarming, especially when your system is supposed to be cooling your home. An AC can freeze up for several reasons, including restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or problems with the system's components. Here are some things you can check and what to do if the problem keeps coming back.

The 5 Real Causes

What's Actually Freezing Your AC

1

Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

The single most common cause. A clogged filter chokes off airflow across the coil, letting it get too cold and ice over. Check it first  it's free to fix.

2

Low Refrigerant (a Leak)

Refrigerant doesn't get "used up"  if the level is low, there's a leak. Low pressure drops the coil temperature well below freezing. This one needs a licensed tech.

3

Blocked or Closed Vents

Furniture over a return vent, or too many supply vents closed off, restricts the airflow the system needs to keep the coil at a safe temperature.

4

Dirty Evaporator Coil

A layer of dust and grime on the coil acts like insulation, disrupting the heat exchange and letting condensation freeze on the surface.

5

Failing Blower Motor or Fan

If the blower fan slows down or stops, warm air stops moving across the coil, and it freezes over from lack of airflow, even with a clean filter.

6

Running It Too Cold, Too Often

Setting the thermostat unusually low, or running AC in cooler outdoor temps, can push the coil below freezing even on an otherwise healthy system.

Do this before we arrive

What to Do Right Now

Turn the system off completely

Switch off at the thermostat, and flip the breaker if you can. Don't just set it to "off" and walk away  leave it fully powered down.

Let the ice melt on its own

This can take 2-6 hours. Don't chip or scrape the ice  it can damage the coil fins and the copper lines underneath.

Check (and replace) the filter

Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, that's likely your problem. Swap it if you have a spare.

Set fan to "On," not "Auto"

Running just the fan (with cooling off) helps air circulate and speeds up thawing without stressing the compressor.

Put down towels

Melting ice means water, sometimes a lot of it. Towels around the indoor unit protect your floors while it thaws.

Don't keep restarting it

Repeatedly switching it back on to "test it" while ice is present is the #1 way a simple freeze-up turns into a blown compressor.
